History and technical background:
Work on the Rheintochter missile began in 1941, aiming to create an effective air defense system. It was a two-stage rocket, guided by radio waves. The R-1 version represented in the model was the first constructed subsonic version. The fuel for the engines of both stages was smokeless powder, dibutylglycol. The first-stage engine, located behind the second-stage fuselage, operated for 0.6 seconds and was equipped with seven exhaust nozzles. Four stabilizers made of plywood were attached to its body.
After the first-stage engine completed its operation, the rocket stages separated, and the second-stage engine was activated, which operated for 10 seconds. Six exhaust nozzles and six wings made of plywood were arranged around the fuselage. The warhead was located at the rear of the fuselage, while the proximity fuse and guidance compartment were located at the front. The missile was controlled by four plate stabilizers in a canard configuration.
Although the R-1 version of the missile proved unsuccessful due to insufficient performance, it was used for testing guidance systems. The R-1 version was part of a larger program that also included the development of the supersonic R-3 version. The Rheintochter program was ultimately canceled on February 6, 1945, and none of the missiles were used in combat.
