R.M.S. Titanic - a brief history:

R.M.S. Titanic was a British ocean liner that sank on the night of April 14 to 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, United States. There were approximately 2,224 passengers and crew members on board, of which about 1,500 perished, making this disaster one of the most tragic in maritime history during peacetime.

The Titanic was the largest ship on the water at the time it entered service and the second of three Olympic-class liners built for the White Star Line. The ship was constructed by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The chief ship architect of the yard, Thomas Andrews Jr., perished in the disaster. The Titanic was commanded by Captain Edward John Smith, who also died with the ship. The chairman of the White Star Line, J. Bruce Ismay, managed to get into a lifeboat and survived.

Luxury and innovations:

The Titanic was a symbol of luxury and modernity. First class offered the highest level of comfort and luxury, including a gym, swimming pool, smoking rooms, exquisite restaurants and cafes, a Victorian-style Turkish bath, and hundreds of luxurious cabins. The ship also featured an advanced radio telegraph transmitter for sending passenger "marconigrams" and for operational use of the ship.

The ship was equipped with advanced safety features, such as watertight compartments and remotely operated watertight doors, which contributed to the ship's reputation as "unsinkable." The Titanic had sixteen lifeboats, each capable of lowering three lifeboats, providing a total capacity of 48 boats. Despite this capacity, the ship was equipped with only twenty lifeboats, which proved insufficient in the face of the disaster.

The disaster and its consequences:

The Titanic disaster attracted public attention, caused significant changes in maritime safety regulations, and inspired a lasting legacy in popular culture. It was the second instance in which the White Star Line lost a ship during its maiden voyage, the first being the RMS Tayleur in 1854.

The lifeboats on the Titanic could accommodate 1,178 people — roughly half the number of passengers on board and one-third of the number of passengers the ship could carry at full capacity. British commercial regulations required fourteen lifeboats for a ship weighing 10,000 tons. The Titanic carried six more than required, allowing for an additional 338 places in the lifeboats. When the ship sank, the lifeboats that were launched were filled on average to only 60%.
