Historical background: The BUK missile system is a family of self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air missile systems developed by the Soviet Union and later by the Russian Federation. This system was designed to combat cruise missiles, smart bombs, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. In the Russian A2AD air defense network, BUK is positioned below the S-200/300/400 systems but above the point defense systems Tor and Pantsir.

A standard BUK battalion consists of a command vehicle, a target detection radar vehicle (TAR), six vehicles with launchers and radars (TELAR), and three vehicles with launchers (TEL). A BUK missile battery consists of two TELARs (each with four missiles) and one TEL vehicle, with six missiles, making a total of 14 missiles. The first version of BUK, adopted into service, was designated GRAU 9K37 BUK and was known in the West by the NATO code name "Gadfly" and the US Department of Defense designation SA-11.

Over the years, the BUK system has undergone many upgrades, including the introduction of new missiles and radars, which increased its effectiveness and resistance to electronic jamming. The BUK-M1-2 and BUK-M2 versions received new NATO designations "Grizzly" and new DoD designations SA-17. Since 2013, the latest version "BUK-M3" has been produced and actively used, with the new DoD designation SA-27.
