Historical background:
The 9A52-2 Smerch rocket launcher, also known as BM-30 Smerch, was designed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s and entered service in 1989. This system is intended for destroying infantry, armored targets, and artillery positions in enemy concentration areas. The launcher is based on the MAZ-7310 chassis and is equipped with twelve 300 mm caliber launch tubes. It can fire various types of rockets, including cluster munitions, incendiary bombs, thermobaric charges, and mine-laying bombs.
Smerch was first used in combat in 2014 during the civil war in Syria and in the conflict in Ukraine. This system was also used by Russian forces during the intervention in Syria in 2015. In 2020, during the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, both Armenia and Azerbaijan used Smerch rockets to attack enemy territories. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Smerch was used to shell Ukrainian positions, including during the battle for Kharkiv.
