Saab JAS-39 Gripen is a Swedish light multirole fighter developed by the aerospace company SAAB in collaboration with BAE Systems. The name "Gripen" was chosen in a public competition in 1982, and the symbol JAS stands for Jakt (fighter), Attack (attack), and Spaning (reconnaissance), highlighting the versatility of this aircraft.
Gripen was designed as an aircraft capable of performing various missions, from fighter to attack to reconnaissance. Its design is based on modern composite materials, ensuring lightness and durability. The aircraft is equipped with an advanced Fly-By-Wire control system, which enhances its maneuverability and stability in flight.
Work on the Gripen began after the production of the Saab JA-37 Viggen ended. In 1980, the Swedish armed forces defined the requirements for a new fighter, resulting in the formation of the Industriegruppen JAS AG consortium, which undertook the project. The first Gripen prototype was flown in 1988, and serial production began in 1992.
Gripen is known for its ability to operate from short runways, making it ideal for operations in difficult conditions. Its aerodynamic design, based on a canard configuration with a delta wing, provides excellent flight characteristics.
Gripen is used by the air forces of Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, Thailand, and Brazil. It is one of the few fighters that has been adapted to international standards, including NATO standards, making it an attractive choice for many countries.
