About the aircraft:

The Douglas SBD Dauntless is an American scout and dive bomber that played a key role in the Pacific theater during World War II. Produced by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 to 1944, the SBD was the primary dive bomber operating from US Navy aircraft carriers from mid-1940 to mid-1944. This aircraft was also used by the United States Marine Corps, both from land bases and aircraft carriers.

The SBD Dauntless earned the nickname "Slow But Deadly" due to its initials SBD and its combat effectiveness. It is most remembered for the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where its crews delivered decisive blows to Japanese aircraft carriers, significantly impacting the course of the war in the Pacific.

Operational history:

• Battle of Midway: The SBD Dauntless played a crucial role in the Battle of Midway, where four squadrons of US Navy dive bombers sank or severely damaged all four Japanese aircraft carriers present in the battle area. In just six minutes, three of them (Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū) were destroyed, and later that same day, Hiryū. This success was made possible by a coordinated attack that caught the Japanese Zero fighters by surprise, leaving the SBDs unobstructed in their approach and attack.

• Guadalcanal Campaign: The SBD Dauntless was also a key element of the Guadalcanal campaign, operating from both American aircraft carriers and Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. These aircraft were effective in destroying Japanese ships that had not managed to leave New Georgia before dawn.

• Operation Torch and actions in Europe: In November 1942, SBD Dauntless participated in Operation Torch, the Allied landings in North Africa. In October 1943, these aircraft made their debut in Europe during Operation Leader, attacking German ships near Bodø in Norway.

• Replacement by SB2C Helldiver: In 1944, the US Navy began replacing the SBD with the more advanced SB2C Helldiver. Nevertheless, many pilots preferred the SBD due to its better maneuverability at low speeds, which was crucial during landings on aircraft carriers.

Historical significance:

The SBD Dauntless was one of the most important aircraft in the Pacific War, sinking more enemy ships than any other Allied bomber. A total of 5,936 units of this aircraft were produced. Its combat record includes the sinking of six Japanese aircraft carriers, 14 cruisers, six destroyers, 15 transports or cargo ships, and many other vessels.
