Plastic military model kit: Sd.Kfz.251/22 w/ 7.5 cm PaK 40 Pakwagen 1:35 Border Model BT043
Sd.Kfz. 251/22, also known as "Pakwagen," is a German tank destroyer that was created as a result of Adolf Hitler's decision at the end of 1944. In the face of the growing armored superiority of the Allies, the German command decided to adapt existing armored vehicle chassis for the role of tank destroyers. Thus, the Sd.Kfz. 251/22 project was born, which combined the mobility of an armored personnel carrier with the firepower of the 7.5 cm PaK 40 L/46 anti-tank gun.
The PaK 40 gun was one of the most effective German anti-tank guns, capable of penetrating the armor of most Allied tanks. The Sd.Kfz. 251/22 used a similar gun mounting as the armored car Sd.Kfz.234/4. To allow for a full range of motion for the gun, a number of modifications were made to the vehicle's design, including shortening the lower part of the gun shield and cutting out part of the roof above the driver's position.
Although the vehicle's low profile was maintained, the transporter was overloaded by the weight of the anti-tank gun. The interior of the fighting compartment was significantly altered – three of the four benches and the front seat of the commander were removed, as well as the mounts for the ladders. A ammunition box was placed at the rear on the right side. The four-man crew was equipped with an MG 42 machine gun for defense against infantry.
Production of the Sd.Kfz. 251/22 began in December 1944, and this vehicle quickly became an important element of the German armored forces. Its ability to move quickly and effectively combat enemy tanks made it a valuable tool in the hands of experienced crews.
