At the end of the 1930s, the Italian Royal Army (Regio Esercito) began deploying self-propelled guns to provide support for armored and infantry units. The Semovente 75/18, developed on the chassis of a medium tank of the "M" series, quickly became the most feared Italian armored vehicle. In addition to its primary artillery role, the 75 mm howitzer mounted in the casemate proved to be a highly effective anti-tank weapon, capable of destroying even the most powerful British and American tanks.

However, during the war, the Regio Esercito demanded the development of a version with increased offensive capabilities. The 75/34 gun, originally designed for an anti-tank role, was mounted on the hull of the M42 self-propelled gun. The first units entered the Italian army in the spring of 1943. Due to their high operational effectiveness, these vehicles were also used by German anti-tank battalions after the armistice in September 1943.
