Characteristics of Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane:
History and use: The Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane is the civilian version of the helicopter designed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, which was originally developed as the military CH-54 Tarhe. This helicopter was designed as an extension of the Sikorsky S-60 prototype and first took to the air on May 9, 1962. Although initially tested by the German armed forces, the United States Army decided to purchase the first units.
In 1992, the license to produce the S-64E was acquired by Erickson Air-Crane, which became the largest user and manufacturer of this model. Erickson Air-Crane introduced many upgrades, including the ability to mount large water tanks, making the S-64E an ideal tool for firefighting. These helicopters are used worldwide in various operations, from construction to rescue.
The S-64E Skycrane set records for the highest horizontal flight (11 km) and the fastest ascent to various altitudes (3, 6, and 9 km). Each S-64E unit receives a unique name, and one of the most famous is "Elvis," which participated in firefighting operations in Australia.
