History of SMS Emden:

SMS Emden was the second and last ship of the Dresden class, built for the German Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy). Named after the city of Emden, it was laid down at the Kaiserliche Werft shipyard in Gdańsk in 1906. The hull was launched in May 1908, and construction was completed in July 1909. Emden had one sister ship, the cruiser Dresden. Like its predecessors in the Königsberg class, Emden was armed with ten 10.5 cm (4.1 inch) guns and two torpedo launchers.

Service and achievements:

Most of its career, Emden served in the East Asia Squadron, stationed in Qingdao, in the leased territory of Jiaozhou Bay in China. In 1913, command of the ship was taken over by Karl von Müller. At the beginning of World War I, Emden captured a Russian steamer, converting it into the commerce raider Cormoran. Emden then joined the East Asia Squadron but was soon assigned to independent raiding operations in the Indian Ocean. During nearly two months of operations in this region, Emden captured nearly twenty-four ships.

One of Emden's most famous exploits was the surprise attack on Penang on October 28, 1914. As a result of the Battle of Penang, Emden sank the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet. Müller then directed Emden to raid the Cocos Islands, where he landed a party of sailors to destroy British installations. There, on November 9, 1914, Emden was attacked by the Australian cruiser HMAS Sydney. The more powerful Australian ship quickly inflicted serious damage and forced Müller to run his ship aground to avoid sinking. Of the crew of 376, 133 were killed in the battle. Most of the survivors were taken prisoner; the landing party led by Hellmuth von Müller seized an old schooner and eventually returned to Germany. The wreck of Emden was quickly destroyed by the action of the waves and was scrapped in the 1950s.
