Historical Background:
The Soviet 120 mm mortar wz. 1938, designed by a team led by Boris Shavyrin, proved to be an extremely successful and effective design. Its parameters were so impressive that after capturing examples, the Germans decided to copy this weapon and introduce it into their own armament under the designation 12 cm Granatwerfer 42. This mortar was characterized by a range of 450 to 5700 meters and a rate of fire of up to 15 rounds per minute. The weight of the set was about 282 kg, and a wide range of ammunition was used for its operation: from high-explosive fragmentation, through smoke and incendiary, to illuminating.
