History and technical background:
BM-14-16 is a Soviet multiple launch rocket system with a caliber of 140 mm, also known as "Boyevaya Mashina" (combat vehicle). This system, like its predecessor BM-13 "Katyusha," became a symbol of Soviet rocket artillery. The BM-14-16 was developed in the early 1950s and was mainly used in the 1950s and 1960s.
The BM-14-16 system was mounted on the chassis of the ZIL-151 truck, which provided it with high mobility and the ability to quickly move on the battlefield. The launcher was equipped with 16 launch tubes from which M-14 rockets with high-explosive, smoke, or chemical warheads could be fired. These rockets had a range of up to 9.8 km, making them effective for saturation fire.
The BM-14-16 was used by various armies around the world, including the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War and Somali forces during the Ogaden War. In the Soviet Union, this system was gradually replaced by more modern launchers like the BM-21 Grad, which offered greater range and payload capacity.
