About the original:
ŁaGG-3 (Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov) is a Soviet fighter aircraft from World War II, developed by a team of designers: Semyon Lavochkin, Vladimir Gorbunov, and Mikhail Gudkov. The aircraft was created in response to the urgent need to modernize Soviet aviation. Unlike other Soviet projects of that period, it was constructed mainly from wood - a non-deficit and readily available material in the USSR.
The prototype (initially designated as I-22, later ŁaGG-1) made its first flight in 1940. Serial production of the ŁaGG-3 version began in the spring of 1941. The aircraft was distinguished by good armament; however, it was relatively heavy and less maneuverable compared to its competitors. Despite these drawbacks, the machine served in front-line units from 1941 to 1945. Experiences from the operation of the ŁaGG-3 contributed to the development of the legendary fighter Ła-5.
