This plastic model represents the Soviet fighter Polikarpov I-16 type 5, which was one of the most important fighter aircraft of the USSR in the 1930s. Designed by N.N. Polikarpov, known as the "king of fighters," the I-16 type 5 was the second production version of this aircraft. With a new engine cowling and a more powerful M-25 engine, it reached speeds of up to 450 km/h. During production, the aircraft was equipped with new, reinforced wings, larger wheels, and an open cockpit.
The Polikarpov I-16 played a key role in many armed conflicts of the 1930s, including the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), conflicts with Japan and Finland, and at the beginning of World War II. Although by 1941 this aircraft was largely outdated, it effectively faced more modern German fighters in many cases.
