History of the T-26 tank: The T-26 tank was a Soviet light tank that played a key role in many conflicts of the interwar period and in World War II. It was an evolution of the British Vickers 6-Ton tank and became one of the most successful tank designs of the 1930s. Over 11,000 units were produced, making it the most widely produced tank of that period.

In the 1930s, the USSR developed 53 variants of the T-26, including flame-throwing tanks, engineering vehicles, remote-controlled tanks, self-propelled guns, artillery tractors, and armored personnel carriers. 23 of these variants were produced in series, while the others were experimental models.

Participation in conflicts:

  • Spanish Civil War (1936-1939): The T-26 was the most important tank used by Republican forces, demonstrating superiority over German Panzer I and Italian CV-33 tankettes.
  • Soviet-Japanese conflict: T-26 tanks participated in the Battle of Lake Khasan in 1938 and the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in 1939.
  • Winter War (1939-1940): Used by the Red Army, T-26 tanks proved vulnerable to Finnish anti-tank guns.
  • World War II: The T-26 was the most numerous tank in the armored forces of the Red Army during the German invasion in 1941. It participated in the battles of Moscow, Stalingrad, and the Caucasus. The last combat use occurred in 1945 during the defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria.

Export and use by other countries: T-26 tanks were exported to Spain, China, and Turkey. They were also captured and used by the Finnish, German, Romanian, and Hungarian armies. In Finland, some of the captured tanks served non-combat purposes until 1961.
