History of the Spitfire Mk.VIII: The Spitfire Mk.VIII was an evolution of earlier versions of the Spitfire, adapted to the new requirements of the battlefield. This version was mainly used by USAAF and RAAF units in the Mediterranean and Far East regions. Some examples were equipped with American Packard Merlin engines, which allowed them to be designated as Spitfire Mk.XVI. These later versions were adapted for low-altitude operations as fighters and fighter-bombers, and their distinctive feature was the "bubble-top" canopies.
