History and significance of SPz Marder 1A3: The SPz Marder 1 is a German infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) developed by Rheinmetall, which has served as the main combat vehicle of the Bundeswehr's mechanized infantry divisions since the 1970s. The vehicle has undergone several upgrades, the most significant of which, designated as A3, began in 1988. This upgrade included the addition of 1600 kg of improved armor, reinforced suspension, a new braking system, and a modified turret configuration. The SPz Marder 1A3 has become one of the most proven and reliable infantry fighting vehicles in the world.
Since March 2023, Ukraine began receiving SPz Marder 1A3 vehicles, with deliveries continuing until the end of 2024. According to open sources, Ukraine received about 200 of these vehicles, which mainly went to the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This vehicle has proven to be an effective and well-protected combat vehicle, as confirmed by military operations in Ukraine.
