History and significance of the Stearman PT-17: The Stearman PT-17, also known as the Boeing Stearman or Kaydet, is an American biplane that played a key role as a training aircraft in the 1930s and 1940s. At least 10,626 units of this model were produced, making it one of the most widely used training aircraft in the history of U.S. military aviation.

This aircraft was the primary training tool for pilots of the United States Army Air Forces, the U.S. Navy (under the designations NS and N2S), and the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. After the conflict ended, many of these aircraft entered the civilian market, where they were used as agricultural, sport, and aerobatic planes.

The Stearman PT-17 featured a sturdy construction, a conventional biplane layout, and a large, fixed tailwheel landing gear. The cockpits of the pilot and instructor were open, allowing for excellent visibility during training flights. The aircraft was typically powered by a radial engine, which in most cases was not cowled, although some operators chose to cowling it.
