Historical background: Sturmhaubitze 42 (StuH 42) was a German assault gun used by the Wehrmacht during World War II. It was developed in response to the need for infantry support, as the Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) was increasingly used for tank combat. The design was based on a modified version of the StuG III Ausf. E, equipped with a 10.5 cm assault howitzer 42, developed from the 10.5 cm light field howitzer 18.
Production of the StuH 42 began in 1942, and by the end of the war, approximately 1317 units were produced. This vehicle proved effective as an infantry support weapon, although its ability to destroy enemy tanks was limited due to moderate penetration and relatively low rate of fire.
Combat application: StuH 42s were integrated into existing assault gun batteries, according to documentation from November 1, 1942. Typically, each battery contained one platoon equipped with four StuH 42s. With its howitzer, the StuH 42 could deliver significantly more explosive material to the battlefield compared to the StuG III, making it an effective infantry support weapon.
