History of Sturmgeschütz IV: Sturmgeschütz IV (StuG IV) was a German assault gun that was developed in response to the needs of the German army in the later stages of World War II. It was a variant of the Panzer IV assault gun, which served as a tank destroyer. Its design was similar to the very successful StuG III model, which also served as a tank destroyer in German formations.
The development of the StuG IV began as a result of efforts by the Krupp company, which utilized the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen IV combined with a slightly modified superstructure of the Sturmgeschütz III. The first proposals for this model appeared in February 1943, but the project was initially abandoned due to excessive weight. It was only after the Führer conference in August 1943, where Adolf Hitler recognized the advantages of the StuG III over the Panzer IV in the role of infantry support, that the project was resumed.
Production of the StuG IV began in December 1943, and by May 1945, a total of 1,111 units were produced. Although this number was significantly lower than that of the StuG III, the StuG IV effectively supported combat operations, especially on the Eastern Front, where it became a well-known tank destroyer.
The StuG IV was operated by a four-man crew consisting of a commander, gunner, loader, and driver. It was mainly assigned to infantry divisions, where it served as fire support and tank destroyer.
Currently, there are six preserved examples of the StuG IV that can be seen in various museums around the world:
- In Poland, at the Orła Białego Museum in Skarżysko-Kamienna and at the Armored Weapons Museum in Poznań.
- In Latvia, where one of the examples was found in a swamp and restored by an enthusiast.
- In Australia, at the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum.
- In Russia, at the Vadim Zadorozhny Museum and at the Military Technical Museum "Glory of the Ural".
