History and significance of the T-34: The T-34 tank, designed by the Kharkov Locomotive Factory design bureau under the leadership of M.I. Koshkin, was one of the most important armored vehicles of World War II. Its mass production began in 1940, and by the end of 1944, 35,467 units of this model had been produced in six different factories.
The T-34 was distinguished by its innovative sloped armor, which increased its resistance to fire, as well as a powerful diesel engine and a 76.2 mm caliber gun. It was the first medium tank produced in large quantities with such features, making it one of the best tanks in the world until the end of 1941. In 1942, a version with an improved, hexagonal cast turret, known as the "nut," was introduced, and in the spring of 1943, a commander's cupola was added.
Despite initial problems with ergonomics and the lack of a radio, the T-34 became the backbone of Soviet armored forces from 1941 to 1945. Its design was continuously modernized, allowing for improved performance and reduced production costs. In 1944, a new version, the T-34-85, appeared on the battlefields, equipped with a more powerful 85 mm caliber gun and a turret designed for three crew members.
