History and construction of the T-34/85 tank:
The T-34/85 tank is an evolution of the earlier T-34 model, which was the main tank of the Red Army during World War II. The introduction of new German tanks, such as the Panther and Tiger, forced Soviet designers to modernize the T-34 to meet new challenges on the battlefield. As a result of these efforts, the T-34/85 was created, equipped with a more powerful 85 mm gun and a new three-man turret.
Mass production of the T-34/85 began in early 1944. This tank differed from its predecessor mainly in its new armament and turret design. The first units were equipped with the D-5T gun, and from March 1944, with the ZiS-S-53 gun, which became standard in later productions. The production of the T-34/85 was carried out in many factories, resulting in some differences in construction, such as turret shape or road wheel design.
Technical specifications of the T-34/85 tank:
- Armament: 85 mm ZiS-S-53 gun, coupled with a 7.62 mm DTM machine gun
- Armor: Rolled armor plates with a maximum thickness of 60 mm
- Engine: Diesel, V-type, liquid-cooled
- Power transmission system: Gearbox with 5 forward gears and 1 reverse
- Suspension: Independent on arms and coil springs
- Communication range: Up to 20 km while stationary
The T-34/85 was not only produced in the USSR but also in Czechoslovakia and Poland after World War II. A total of about 44,000 units of this model were produced. After the war, the T-34/85 was exported to many countries and participated in numerous armed conflicts, such as the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and wars in the Middle East. In Europe, it was last used in combat during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995.
