History and Technical Background of the T-55 AM-1: The T-55 AM-1 is a modernized version of the T-55 tank, which was introduced into service in the 1950s. The modernization of the T-55AM aimed to extend the tank's lifespan and improve its combat capabilities in the face of changing military technologies. As part of the modernization project, additional passive armor, an improved Volna fire control system, and optional equipment for the new guided missile Bastion were added. The T-55AM-1 version was equipped with a modern and more powerful V-46-5M engine, based on the power unit used in the T-72 tank.
Historical Significance: The T-54 and T-55 tanks, including the T-55 AM-1, are the most widely produced tanks in history, with an estimated production number ranging from 96,500 to 100,000 units. Although they have been replaced by newer models in the Soviet and Russian armies, such as the T-62, T-64, T-72, T-80, and T-90, they are still used by about 50 armies worldwide. Their first appearance in the West in the 1950s contributed to the development of new military technologies, such as the British Royal Ordnance L7 gun and the American M60 tank. T-55 tanks were known for their durability and ability to survive in harsh conditions, including in the face of nuclear explosions. The T-55A version, on which the T-55 AM-1 is based, was equipped with an NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) protection system, which increased the crew's chances of survival in the event of a nuclear attack.
