History and achievements of the P-47 Thunderbolt: The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug," was one of the main fighters used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. Produced by Republic Aviation from 1941 to 1945, the P-47 was successful in both the European and Pacific theaters of war as an escort fighter, well-suited for air combat at high altitudes. It was also a leading American fighter-bomber in ground attack roles.

The P-47 was known for its powerful firepower, equipped with eight .50 caliber machine guns and the ability to carry 5-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg). At full load, the aircraft weighed up to 8 tons, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. It was also known for its ability to stay airborne despite battle damage.

The aircraft was designed around the powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, an 18-cylinder radial engine that also powered other well-known American fighters such as the Grumman F6F Hellcat and Vought F4U Corsair. An advanced supercharger provided the P-47 with dominance at high altitudes, while also influencing its size and construction. The armored cockpit was relatively spacious and comfortable, and the sliding canopy introduced in the D version offered good visibility.

The P-47 also served in the air forces of France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and in allied Mexican and Brazilian squadrons. It is also the namesake of the later American attack aircraft, the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.
