  • Scale: 1:35
  • Manufacturer: Rye Field Model
  • Catalog number: 5140
  • Represents: Tiger I Early Production, used by Michael Wittmann during the Battle of Kursk in 1943

The Tiger I, also known as Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E, was one of the most recognizable heavy tanks used by the Wehrmacht during World War II. Its production began in August 1942 and ended in August 1944, after 1,347 units were produced. This tank was armed with a powerful 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun, which was an adaptation of the famous Flak 36 anti-aircraft gun, known as the "eighty-eight".

The Tiger I was primarily used in independent heavy tank battalions, operating on both the African front and in the Soviet Union. Although it was considered an outstanding design for its time, it was criticized for its overly complicated construction and costly materials and production methods. In the early stages of its service, this tank was prone to track failures and other mechanical issues, making it expensive to maintain. Nevertheless, it was generally mechanically reliable.

The Tiger I tank got its name "Tiger" from the German Ministry of Armaments and Munitions on August 7, 1941. After the introduction of the Tiger II tank, a Roman numeral was added to its name. In March 1943, the tank was reclassified as Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung E with the inventory designation Sd.Kfz. 181.

The Battle of Kursk, which took place in July 1943, was one of the largest tank battles in history and a key moment on the Eastern Front. Michael Wittmann, one of the most famous German tank commanders, gained fame in this battle due to his combat skills and effectiveness in battle. His actions during this battle contributed to his later fame as one of the best tank aces of World War II.
