History and characteristics of the Trabant 601:

The Trabant 601 was produced by VEB Sachsenring in Zwickau, Saxony, from 1964 to 1990. It was the third model in the Trabant series, which became the most recognizable and longest-produced model of this brand. A total of 2,818,547 units were produced, making it the most popular car in the GDR.

The Trabant 601 was East Germany's answer to the West German "people's car," the Volkswagen Beetle. Its aim was to provide an affordable yet reliable vehicle that was easy to repair and maintain. Although it became outdated over time, at the time of its market introduction, it was modern thanks to its front-wheel drive, transversely mounted engine, self-supporting construction, rack and pinion steering, and independent suspension.

The body of the Trabant was made of Duroplast, which made it lightweight yet durable. The main drawback was the two-stroke engine, which over time became outdated compared to the four-stroke engines used in Western cars. Nevertheless, the Trabant 601 was easy to operate and repair, contributing to its popularity.

Cultural significance:

The Trabant 601 became a symbol of the GDR and is often associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Although it was noisy and uncomfortable, many people formed an emotional bond with this car, appreciating its simplicity and functionality.
