History and Background:

Under the Treaty of Friendship and Mutual Assistance of 1950, the Soviet Union provided China with the documentation necessary for the production of Romeo-class submarines. The Chinese version, known as Type 033, began production in 1962. By 1984, a total of 84 units of this type had been built in China, with several exported to other countries.

The Chinese Type 033 version introduced a number of improvements over the original Romeo design. One of the key elements was the modernization of sonar systems. The initially used Soviet sonar was replaced by the Chinese Type 105, and later by the H/SQ2-262A produced by Factory No. 613. Over time, most of the submarines of this type were retired from active service or converted into training units.

Experience with operating submarines in warmer climates showed that the Soviet cooling and air conditioning systems, designed for subarctic and arctic conditions, were inadequate in subtropical and tropical regions. As a result, all units intended for deployment in such areas underwent modernization of their cooling and air conditioning systems. In 1969, the construction of new Type 033 submarines with improved systems began at the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou, where 13 units were completed.
