Vehicle history: The Mercedes-Benz W31 Type G4 is a German three-axle off-road vehicle that was first produced by Mercedes-Benz in 1934 as a staff car for the Wehrmacht. These cars were designed as seven-seater convertibles or closed limousines and were mainly used by high-ranking officials of the Nazi regime during parades and inspections, as they were too expensive for general military use.
The G4 vehicle was designed by Daimler-Benz in 1934 and was produced until 1939. It was a heavy six-seater off-road vehicle with an eight-cylinder engine producing 100, and later 110 horsepower. This car was too complicated and costly for mass production, which is why it was produced in relatively small numbers. Some of these vehicles were equipped with MG 34 machine guns and served to transport the high command of the Wehrmacht as well as escort vehicles.
The G4 vehicles were used by Adolf Hitler and his staff during parades related to the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland. Of the 57 units produced, at least four have survived to this day in their original form. One of them is located in the Sinsheim Auto and Technik Museum, another was a gift to Spanish dictator Francisco Franco and is part of the collection of the Spanish Royal Guard. Another unit was used in Hollywood and appeared in many war films.
