The Bofors 40 mm Mk1/Mk2 gun, produced under license in the United States, became the primary short-range anti-aircraft weapon on US Navy ships during World War II. Its production began in 1942, and the first units were deployed on ships after the Battle of Midway. This gun was known for its high rate of fire, reaching 160 rounds per minute, making it extremely effective against enemy aircraft.

Quad-mounted Bofors guns were installed on many types of ships, including aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. For example, USS "Enterprise" (CV-6) received its first Bofors during the campaign in the Solomons, significantly enhancing its defensive capabilities.
