History and use of the Piper Cub L-4 Grasshopper:
The Piper Cub L-4 Grasshopper, also known as O-59, was the military version of the civilian Piper J-3 Cub aircraft. This airplane was designed as a light observation and liaison aircraft, and its construction was based on simplicity and lightness, which provided excellent maneuverability at low speeds and the ability to operate from short runways.
During World War II, the L-4 Grasshopper was widely used by the U.S. armed forces for tasks such as artillery observation, training liaison pilots, as well as for reconnaissance missions, medical evacuation, and courier transport. Due to its low cruising speed and ability to maneuver at low altitudes, the L-4 was an ideal tool for detecting hidden German artillery and armored vehicles during the Allied invasion of France in June 1944.
This aircraft was also known for improvised modifications, such as the installation of bazookas to attack enemy vehicles. One of the most famous such aircraft was the L-4 named "Rosie the Rocketer," piloted by Major Charles "Bazooka Charlie" Carpenter, who gained fame for destroying several tanks and armored vehicles during the Battle of Arracourt.
After the war, many L-4 aircraft were sold as military surplus, but a significant number remained in service. Civilian versions were often registered as J-3, but retained their wartime glazing and paint.
