The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a two-seat, supersonic carrier-borne aircraft with variable-sweep wings, which for decades formed the backbone of the US Navy's air defense. Designed for air superiority and escorting carrier battle groups, it became one of the most recognizable machines in aviation history. The F-14B version, an evolution of the original design, received significantly more powerful General Electric F110-GE-400 engines, which eliminated the propulsion problems that plagued early models and significantly improved the aircraft's performance.

This squadron is known worldwide for its characteristic emblem of a skull and crossbones on the vertical stabilizers.
