Characteristics of the SB2U-3 Vindicator:
The SB2U-3 Vindicator was an American dive bomber designed for operations from aircraft carriers. It was the first monoplane in this role in the United States Navy. This aircraft was developed in the 1930s and although it was retired from active combat service by 1943, it played a key role during the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
History and development:
Beginnings: In 1934, the United States Navy announced a requirement for a new reconnaissance bomber for use from aircraft carriers. Vought, the manufacturer of the aircraft, proposed two designs: the monoplane XSB2U-1 and the biplane XSB3U-1. Ultimately, the monoplane was selected and went into production as the SB2U-1.
Design: The SB2U-3 was a more advanced version, designed as a long-range bomber. Equipped with a Pratt and Whitney R-1535 Twin-Wasp Junior engine, it had the capability to operate from both aircraft carriers and land bases. The aircraft could carry a 1000-pound bomb on a special trapeze, allowing for release in a steep dive.
Improvements: The SB2U-3 version was equipped with additional fuel tanks in the wings, which increased its range. Additionally, the aircraft had a reinforced tail structure and the capability to mount floats.
Operational history:
Battle of Midway: SB2U-3 Vindicators from squadron VMSB-241 participated in the Battle of Midway, where their pilots demonstrated extraordinary courage. Captain Richard E. Fleming, piloting an SB2U-3, conducted an attack on the Japanese cruiser Mikuma, for which he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Service in the US Navy: Vindicators were used on aircraft carriers such as Saratoga, Lexington, Ranger, and Wasp. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, seven SB2U aircraft were destroyed on the Ewa airfield.
Service in the US Marine Corps: Squadrons VMSB-231 and VMSB-241 were the only units of the Marine Corps that used the SB2U-3. These aircraft were often referred to by pilots as "vibrators" or "wind indicators" due to their specific flight characteristics.
