History of USS Cleveland (CL-55): USS Cleveland (CL-55) was the first ship of the Cleveland class of light cruisers, designed as an evolution of the earlier Brooklyn class cruisers. Despite the limitations imposed by the First London Naval Treaty, wartime needs necessitated the construction of new vessels that were heavier and better armed. Cleveland was launched on November 1, 1941, and commissioned on June 15, 1942.
USS Cleveland participated in many key operations during World War II. After a brief service in the Atlantic, it was transferred to the Pacific, where it took part in the battles of Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, the Marianas, the Philippines, and Borneo. Its crew earned the Navy Unit Commendation for participation in the Battle of the August Gulf. After the war, Cleveland was decommissioned and ultimately scrapped in 1960.
