History of USS Cleveland CL-55: USS Cleveland was launched on November 1, 1941, and commissioned on June 15, 1942. It was a Cleveland-class ship, designed as an evolution of earlier Brooklyn-class cruisers. Despite limitations imposed by naval treaties, the need for new vessels during the war led to the use of hulls from previous designs, but with greater displacement and improved armament.
Cleveland was armed with a main battery consisting of twelve 6-inch (152 mm) guns mounted in four triple turrets. Additionally, it had twelve 5-inch (127 mm) guns for dual-purpose use. The ship achieved a maximum speed of 32.5 knots (60.2 km/h).
Service during World War II: USS Cleveland began its service by participating in the invasion of North Africa in November 1942, supporting landings at Fedhala, Morocco. It was then transferred to the Pacific, where it took part in many key operations, including the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Battle of the Solomon Islands, and the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, for which it received the Navy Unit Commendation.
During its service, Cleveland participated in island bombardments, supported landings, and engaged Japanese naval forces. In the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, Cleveland shot down at least one Japanese aircraft and assisted in the downing of another.
After the war, Cleveland supported occupation operations in Japan and participated in the evacuation of Allied prisoners of war. Ultimately, after the war ended, it was decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1960.
