History of USS Cowpens: USS Cowpens was built at Bath Iron Works in Maine. Its keel was laid on December 23, 1987, and it was launched on March 11, 1989. The ship was commissioned on March 9, 1991, in Charleston, South Carolina. During its service, Cowpens participated in many important military operations, including Tomahawk missile strikes against targets in Iraq in 1993 and actions during the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula in 1994.

USS Cowpens was an active participant in many military operations, including the Iraq War in 2003, where it was the first ship of the U.S. Navy to launch missiles in combat operations. The ship also took part in rescue efforts following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011. In 1994, Cowpens was honored with the prestigious Spokane Trophy for the highest operational readiness of systems among surface ships in the Pacific Fleet.
