About USS Enterprise CV-6:
USS Enterprise (CV-6), also known as "The Big E", was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier built for the United States Navy in the 1930s. It was the seventh ship in the history of the US Navy to bear this name. Launched in 1936, Enterprise was one of three American aircraft carriers of the fleet that survived World War II, alongside Saratoga and Ranger.
Enterprise played a key role in many significant battles in the Pacific during World War II, participating in more combat actions against Japan than any other American ship. It was present during the attack on Pearl Harbor, where 18 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers from its air group reached the harbor during the attack. Seven of these aircraft were shot down, making Enterprise the only American aircraft carrier with a crew present at Pearl Harbor during the attack and the first to suffer losses in the Pacific War.
Among other important battles in which Enterprise participated were the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands, the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, various air-sea clashes during the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Enterprise earned 20 battle stars, making it the most decorated warship of the US during World War II. It was also the first American ship to sink a full-sized enemy vessel after the declaration of war in the Pacific when its aircraft sank the Japanese submarine I-70 on December 10, 1941.
Three times during the war, the Japanese declared that Enterprise had been sunk, earning it the nickname "The Grey Ghost." By the end of the war, its aircraft and guns had shot down 911 enemy aircraft, sunk 71 ships, and damaged or destroyed another 192.
Despite efforts by the community after the war to convert Enterprise into a museum ship, it was scrapped between 1958 and 1960.
