USS Hancock (CV-19) was an American aircraft carrier, laid down in January 1943, launched in January 1944, and commissioned into the US Navy in April 1944. This unit belonged to the Essex class, specifically the Ticonderoga subclass, characterized by an extended hull and reinforced anti-aircraft armament. Ships of this type formed the backbone of the American naval forces in the Pacific in the final phase of World War II.
USS Hancock saw its combat debut in October 1944 during raids on Okinawa and Taiwan. It supported operations in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and attacks on the Japanese Home Islands. Aircraft from this ship took part in the historic ceremony of the signing of Japan's surrender in Tokyo Bay. After the war, the ship underwent a thorough modernization and served during the Vietnam War until its decommissioning in 1976.
