History of USS Montana BB-67: USS Montana BB-67 was one of five battleships of the Montana class that were approved for construction during World War II. They were to be successors to the Iowa class, characterized by larger size, better armor, and more powerful armament. It was planned that these battleships would be armed with twelve 16-inch (406 mm) Mark 7 guns, arranged in four triple turrets. They were the only American battleships that could compete with the Japanese Yamato class battleships in terms of displacement and firepower.
The design of the Montana class began before the USA entered World War II, and the first two ships were approved by Congress in 1939. However, changing wartime priorities, especially after the successes of aircraft carriers in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, led to the construction of battleships being deemed less urgent. As a result, in July 1943, the project was canceled in favor of the production of Essex class aircraft carriers and further construction of Iowa class battleships.
The Montana class was designed without treaty limitations, allowing for significant increases in armor and armament compared to earlier classes of battleships. They were the only American battleships that could match the Japanese Yamato class battleships in terms of displacement. Although they were never built, their design provided valuable experiences that were utilized in later projects, such as the Midway class aircraft carriers.
