History of USS New Jersey (BB-62): USS New Jersey, also known as "Big J," was the second Iowa-class battleship named after the state of New Jersey. Its construction began in 1938, and it was launched on December 12, 1942. The battleship was officially commissioned on May 23, 1943.
During its service, USS New Jersey earned more battle stars than any other Iowa-class battleship. It participated in combat operations during World War II, bombarding targets in Guam and Okinawa and providing cover for aircraft carriers in the Marshall Islands area. During the Korean War, it took part in raids along the coast of North Korea.
In 1968-1969, during the Vietnam War, USS New Jersey was reactivated to support American ground forces. In the 1980s, it underwent modernization that allowed it to carry missile systems, which was part of the 600-ship Navy program. In 1983, it participated in military operations during the Lebanese Civil War.
USS New Jersey was ultimately decommissioned in 1991, after 21 years of active service. Throughout its career, it earned 19 battle and campaign stars for combat actions during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, and for service in the Persian Gulf. Since October 15, 2001, it has served as a museum ship in Camden, New Jersey.
