History of USS Salem (CA-139):

USS Salem (CA-139) was one of three heavy cruisers of the Des Moines class that were completed for the United States Navy just after the end of World War II. The ship was launched on March 25, 1947, at the Bethlehem Steel Co. shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, and was commissioned on May 14, 1949. It was the last heavy cruiser in the world to be commissioned, as well as the last American cruiser armed solely with gun artillery.

USS Salem was equipped with the world's first automatic 8-inch guns, which used shell ammunition instead of the traditional separate loading of projectiles and propellant charges. During its service, the cruiser served as the flagship of the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, participating in numerous exercises and maneuvers, as well as humanitarian efforts, such as aid after the earthquake in the Ionian Islands in 1953.

After being decommissioned in 1959, USS Salem was preserved as part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In 1994, it returned to Quincy, Massachusetts, where it currently serves as a museum ship within the United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum. On board, there is also a museum of USS Newport News, an exhibition of the US Navy Cruiser Sailors Association, and a display of the US Navy SEALs.
