History of USS Salem (CA-139): USS Salem was the second ship of the Des Moines class and the last heavy cruiser to enter service in the world. Its construction began on July 4, 1945, at the Bethlehem Steel Co. shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. The ship was launched on March 25, 1947, and entered service on May 14, 1949, under the command of Captain John C. Daniel.
USS Salem was equipped with the world's first automatic 8-inch guns, which used cartridge ammunition instead of traditional projectile and powder bag loading. The ship primarily served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, functioning as the flagship of the 6th Fleet.
USS Salem was decommissioned on January 30, 1959, and stored as part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In 1994, the ship returned to Quincy, Massachusetts, where it was converted into a museum ship. It is now part of the United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum and can be visited on weekends.
