Description
Plastic model kit: USS Yorktown II 1:700 Hasegawa WL709
Plastic model kit depicting the American aircraft carrier USS Yorktown II (CV-10) in 1:700 scale. The product comes from the valued Water Line (WL) series, which means the model is designed for display on a flat surface imitating the water surface (a "waterline" type model).
History of the original:
USS Yorktown II (CV-10) was the second Essex-class aircraft carrier, forming the core of American naval power in the Pacific between 1943-1945. The keel for the unit was laid in 1941, and the ship entered service with the US Navy in April 1943. Originally named Bon Homme Richard, the name was changed to commemorate the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) sunk in the Battle of Midway.
The ship took part in the most important operations of World War II, including:
- Fighting in the Marcus Island area (August 1943).
- Operations in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands.
- Battle of the Philippine Sea, where its air group contributed to the sinking of the Japanese aircraft carrier Zuikaku.
- Battle of Leyte Gulf.
- Support for the invasion of Okinawa and the attack on the battleship Yamato.
After the war, the unit underwent modernization, serving, among others, during the Vietnam War, and currently serves as a museum ship in Charleston.
Model characteristics:
- Scale: 1:700
- Series: Water Line
- Accurate representation of the silhouette of the Essex-class aircraft carrier from the WWII period.
- The set includes plastic parts allowing for the construction of the model in a waterline configuration.
Kit for self-assembly and painting. Does not include paints or glue. To assemble, separately sold modeling tools are required (including nippers, files, tweezers), paints, brushes and plastic model glue (e.g., Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
