History and background of the vehicle:

The M10 tank destroyer, formally known as the 3-inch Gun Motor Carriage M10, was one of the key American vehicles of this type used during World War II. Its design began in response to the needs of the newly formed American tank destroyer force. The M10 prototype was created in early 1942, and after necessary modifications, production started in June of the same year. The M10 was built on a modified chassis of the M4 Sherman tank and equipped with a rotating turret with a 3-inch (76.2 mm) gun.

The M10 was produced in two variants: the M10 GMC, which used the M4A2 Sherman chassis, and the M10A1 on the M4A3 chassis. Production of both models lasted from September 1942 to December 1943 and from October 1942 to November 1943.

Despite its relatively thin, albeit sloped armor, the M10 was valued for the reliability of its drivetrain and the effectiveness of its anti-tank gun. Although it became outdated over time in the face of new German tanks, such as the Panther, and the introduction of more advanced models, the M10 remained in service until the end of the war.

Participation in the Lend-Lease program:

Under the Lend-Lease program, the United States supplied many M10 vehicles to its allies, including the Soviet Union. Approximately 52 M10 units were delivered to the USSR, where they formed two self-propelled artillery regiments. The first, the 1223rd Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment, was part of the 29th Armored Corps and participated in campaigns on the Belarusian Front, in the Baltic States, and in East Prussia in 1944. The second, the 1239th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment, fought in Belarus and Poland in the same year.

Lend-Lease program:

The Lend-Lease program, formally known as the Lend-Lease Act, was a key element of American policy to support allies during World War II. It allowed for the delivery of military equipment, food, and fuel to countries fighting against the Axis powers. Under this program, the United States supplied equipment worth $50.1 billion, which accounted for 17% of total U.S. wartime expenditures.
