History and background: The VF-19 Excalibur Custom, known as the Fire Valkyrie, is an advanced variable fighter developed as a successor to the aging VF-11B Thunderbolt model. Its development aimed to introduce a new generation of fighters that could effectively replace older units. Due to limited production, only the most talented pilots had the opportunity to use it.
Ray Lovelock, thanks to his connections with the military aboard the 37th Colonial Fleet, acquired a standard VF-19 model, which was then modified by Basara Nekki. The Fire Valkyrie played a key role in the evaluation and formal acceptance into the Macross 7 fleet. Despite its military presence, the Fire Valkyrie is classified as a civilian unit and is often used during concerts by the Fire Bomber team.
Significance in the Macross universe: The VF-19 was originally intended to serve as a first-strike weapon against the Zentradi, who continued to wage war in the galaxy against the Monitoring Army. With this variable fighter, the United Forces could directly attack and confuse Zentradi forces, exposing them to culture through music, which was a completely foreign experience that disrupted their strictly military lifestyle.
