History and significance of the Vickers Medium Tank Mk.II: The Vickers Medium Tank Mk.II was developed as a successor to the Vickers Medium Mark I to replace the already outdated Medium Mark C tanks. Production and modernization of this model lasted from 1925 to 1934. This tank was used by British armored regiments until 1939, when it was replaced by the Cruiser Mk I.
The Vickers Medium Mk.II introduced several significant improvements compared to its predecessor. Changes included a higher superstructure with the driver's visor located on top rather than at the front, improved suspension protected by armored shields, and Rackham clutches that provided a primitive form of mechanical power steering. Despite being slightly heavier, its maximum speed was 13 mph (21 km/h), which was somewhat slower than the 15 mph (24 km/h) achieved by the Medium Mark I.
The Vickers Medium Mk.II tanks were used by the Royal Tank Regiments and replaced some of the heavy Mark V tanks. They were first used in combat during the Mohmand campaign in 1935 on the northwestern frontier of British India. In 1939, several examples were sent to Egypt for experiments conducted by Major General Sir Percy Hobart. Although these tanks were withdrawn before Italy entered the war in June 1940, they were used for driver training.
During the threat of a German invasion in the summer of 1940, some of these outdated vehicles were briefly reactivated. Although none of the mobile Vickers Medium faced the Italian invasion of Egypt in September 1940, at least one was used as a stationary armored bunker in the defense of Mersa Matruh.
