History and significance of the Vickers Medium Tank Mk.II: The Vickers Medium Tank Mk.II was a British medium tank produced by Vickers during the interwar period. It was developed as a successor to the Vickers Medium Mark I to replace the already outdated Medium Mark C models. Production and modernization of this model lasted from 1925 to 1934, and its withdrawal from service began in 1939 when it was replaced by the Cruiser Mk I.
This tank introduced several significant improvements compared to its predecessor, such as a higher superstructure with the driver's visor mounted on top, an improved suspension system protected by armor, and Rackham clutches, which represented a primitive form of mechanical servomechanism. Despite being slightly heavier, its maximum speed was 13 mph (21 km/h), which was somewhat slower than the 15 mph (24 km/h) achieved by the Medium Mark I.
Operational use: The Vickers Medium Mark II, like its predecessor, replaced some of the heavy Mark V tanks and was used by the Royal Armoured Corps until its withdrawal in 1938. These tanks were first used in combat during the Mohmand campaign in 1935 on the northwestern frontier of British India. In 1939, some of these tanks were sent to Egypt for experimentation by Major General Sir Percy Hobart and his Mobile Division (Egypt), but they were withdrawn before Italy entered the war in June 1940.
During the threat of a German invasion in the summer of 1940, some of these outdated vehicles were briefly reactivated. Although none of the mobile Vickers Medium faced the Italian invasion of Egypt in September 1940, at least one was used as a stationary armored bunker in the defense of Mersa Matruh.
