History of the Voyager probes: The Voyager program is an American scientific program that includes two interstellar probes: Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. They were launched in 1977 to take advantage of a favorable planetary alignment and to study the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, as well as potentially the ice giants, Uranus and Neptune. After completing their planetary flybys, the probes continued their mission, exploring interstellar space and the outer regions of the Solar System.
Voyager 1, after a successful flyby of Saturn and its moon Titan, was directed to explore interstellar space. On August 25, 2012, data from Voyager 1 indicated that the probe had entered interstellar space. Voyager 2, after flybys of Uranus and Neptune, also crossed the heliosphere boundary on November 5, 2018.
Significance of the Voyager mission: The Voyager probes are the only human-made objects to have reached interstellar space. Voyager 1 is the farthest human-made object from Earth. The Voyager mission was part of a larger plan for the exploration of the outer planets, known as the Planetary Grand Tour, which was designed in the 1960s and 1970s. By utilizing a rare planetary alignment, the probes were able to reach all the outer planets using gravitational assists.
Construction of the Voyager probes: Each Voyager probe weighed 815 kg at launch, and after fuel consumption, their mass is about 733 kg. The probes are equipped with three-axis stabilization systems that use data from gyroscopes and accelerometers to direct high-gain antennas toward Earth and scientific instruments toward research targets. Onboard are various scientific instruments, including magnetometers, spectrometers, and imaging systems.
Assembly and painting kit. Does not include paints or glue. Assembly requires separately sold modeling tools (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g., Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
