History and use of the vehicle: The Wiesel 1 was developed for the West German army to meet the requirements for a light armored vehicle that could be transported by air. Its main task was to support airborne troops in combat against enemy infantry and tanks. Production began in the 1980s, and the vehicle quickly gained recognition for its versatility and ability to be transported in NATO aircraft.

The Wiesel 1 has been used in many Bundeswehr missions abroad, including operations UNOSOM II, IFOR, SFOR, KFOR, TFH, and ISAF. In 2023, the Wiesel 1 MELLS and MK variants were used by German forces to secure an airport near Khartoum during the evacuation of German citizens from Sudan.

The Wiesel 1 is equipped with steel armor that provides protection against small-caliber ammunition and shrapnel. Although the possibility of dropping the vehicle from an aircraft using parachutes was tested, it was not successful. Nevertheless, the Wiesel 1 can be easily transported by transport helicopters such as the CH-53 Sea Stallion, which can carry two of these vehicles at the same time.
