The history and significance of the Sherman Firefly tank:
The Sherman Firefly was a medium tank used by Great Britain and some armored formations of other allies during World War II. It was based on the American M4 Sherman tank but was equipped with a more powerful British 76.2 mm (3.00 inch) 17-pounder anti-tank gun as its main armament. Initially designed as a temporary solution until future British tank designs entered service, the Sherman Firefly became the most widely used vehicle with the 17-pounder gun during the war.
The British army extensively used Sherman tanks; however, they initially rejected the idea of mounting the 17-pounder gun on the Sherman, waiting for the development of their own tank models. Thanks to the efforts of two persistent British officers, the government's resistance was eventually overcome, and the Firefly went into production. This turned out to be fortunate, as the Cruiser Mk VIII Challenger and Cruiser Mk VIII Cromwell tank designs encountered difficulties and delays.
After resolving the issue of fitting such a large gun into the Sherman turret, the Firefly went into production in early 1944, just in time to equip the 21st Army Group commanded by General Bernard Montgomery for the Normandy landings. It quickly gained value as its gun could almost always penetrate the armor of the Panther and Tiger tanks it faced in Normandy, which was not possible for any other British or American tank.
Due to the Firefly's barrel being noticeably longer than that of the standard 75 mm Sherman, crews attempted to use camouflage to make the tank look like an ordinary Sherman from a distance. Between 2,100 and 2,200 units were produced before production ended in 1945; it is uncertain whether this number includes the 100 tanks built for the United States.
