Historical background:

The United States Marine Corps (USMC) gained fame through extremely difficult "island-hopping" operations in the Pacific. From the shores of Guadalcanal to the volcanic terrain of Iwo Jima, the Marines specialized in amphibious landings, using motorboats and pontoons to breach heavily fortified enemy positions. Although primarily associated with fighting the Japanese, USMC soldiers also took part in operations on the European front, including the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. Their determination and proficiency in landing tactics made them one of the most elite military formations in history.
